For Valentine’s, Jimmy brought home an old Ford Customline. Lauren had talked with him about getting a car for the past year and a half. She had always wanted a classic car; he noticed the way she looked at things whenever they walked through the Towe Auto Museum together.

Lauren was at home when Jimmy arrived. She had just come from work and was watching the news. She thought she would have a small drink before dinner and was walking into the kitchen when she heard the engine idle on the driveway. She pulled open the curtains and saw Jimmy standing leaning onto the car with his elbow and the driver side door swung open.

"What do you think?" Jimmy said.
"What do I think? Jim. I don’t know what to say," Lauren said, "We need a car, but I never expected this."
"Aww, what’s the matter hun? Don’t tell me you’re not happy."
"I am. But Jim, how are we going to get by…car’s like this don’t come cheap."
"Don’t worry about it," Jimmy said.

Jimmy worked as tour guide at the museum. Lauren was a substitute teacher for a few small elementary schools. Though they were not poor, combined, they only made enough to get from month to month. For the past year, they had been driving Jimmy’s mother’s car. Jimmy’s mother had not needed it then, but had plans to move back to Reno in the next month.

Jimmy watched Lauren trace the edge of the car with her finger as she walked around it. When he saw the car in the parking lot with "For Sale" sign in the back window, he felt unable to resist. But as she walked, Lauren’s face was a mixture of worry and delight, Jimmy had begun to wonder if he had made a brash decision. He reached into the car and turned off the ignition.

During dinner, they both looked at the car outside the window. It was a far cry from the rusty brown of Jimmy’s mother’s car that they had become use to seeing under the porch light. "Honestly, how much did you pay for it?" Lauren said.
"Five thousand," Jimmy said.
"Jesus. That’s almost half of our entire savings Jim."
"Well, we needed car, we would have to take if off eventually."
"Yes. I know we needed one, but don’t you think this is a bit much. We could have got something cheaper. I mean, just look at what we had before."
"Maybe we can sell some things in the house, have a garage sale for the things that we don’t need."
"As if we have anything that we don’t need."
"I could sell my records. Some of them will get a good price."
"And how much do you think that will be in the end, a few hundred?"

Jimmy took his plate into the kitchen and then poured himself another drink. "What’s happened to you?" he said.
"I don’t know anymore with things how they are," Lauren said.
"You know that we always make it in the end babe."
"Yeah. It’s just, I had expected more than just making it in the end."

After dinner, Lauren and Jimmy sat together on the sofa. They watched a movie that was showing on television. It was "Two for the Road" with Audrey Hepburn. She was Lauren’s favorite. Lauren fell asleep before the end of it. Jimmy watched the end. When he was finished, he got up and turned the porch light off.

A rather bad photo thereof taken through my bedroom window. I’m not feeling like taking a photo of myself much this week. But I am in this one.
My travel plans haven’t advanced much except that I’m now thinking of going earlier. I don’t think I’ll mind that much being away for my birthday if I’m having a nice time. And the flight and accommodation will be cheaper as it’s further out of season. JAHsbskferlgnrgberg;. That about sums it up. I think I should think about what I’m going to see now. Flickr will probably be rather good for ideas. I’ve already seen the Tour Montparnesse on Adam’s stream. Maybe it’ll be as good for travel ideas as for recipes!
Hmmm. More bras this week. Can’t remember much that happened distinctly. On Thursday I had a coffee with Dad before work and then realised I was half an hour early. So I went to Lidl where I found make-your-own calenders, which Mum had actually been looking for. So that was good.
Friiiiiday. Mum and I went for a walk & delivered the village newsletter things (hence lots of pictures of sheep and fields) and then went to Taunton. We had lunch in the place that used to be Orange Tree Interiors, near St Mary Magdalene church, and shopped a bit before I started work and Mum went to pick Kate up. I worked 4-8 as we had a sale on & extra opening hours. There weren’t many people around so Julie and I just cleaned and tidied for a lot of the time. Dad came and picked me up in the car which he’s now finished fixing, hoorah!
On Saturday I had an unintentional lie-in. Dad sorted out the funny headlights. It turned out to be the switch. On Saturday evening I went to a murder mystery party held by my friend Hatti. I reversed out between the cars & down the twisty drive, without jerking the clutch at all (going back to petrol after 2 weeks of diesel). But then I backed across the road into Mum’s car which she’d left there so I could get out. There was a horrible crunch and now I feel very stupid and wretched.
I really didn’t want to believe that it happened. But it did. Argh. And now there’s a crack in one of my brake lights and some dents in the side of Mum’s (relatively new) car. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh. It’s ridiculously easy to wreck things. That must’ve knocked value off the car, the dents need fixing and if we claim on the insurance I’ll lose my no-claims bonus and possibly Dad’s too. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh.
Mum & Dad are being really nice about it and made me go to the party anyway. It was a nice evening, despite my feeling rubbish. I played a very austere Calvinist reverend and I didn’t do it. But I did believe that everyone else was destined to burn in hell and I tried to blackmail the dead woman.
Today I slept more. And I took this. And I went for a walk with Mum & Dad. It was very icy and frosty and my ear got chilblainey when we got in. It’s still a bit lumpy and hurty.
So all together not super.
